Going for a wedding dinner with my dad later. It's gonna be full of SERIOUSLY powerful and famous people. I think I'm gonna be bored out of my wits cos I suspect my dad will be exercising his amazing nerworking skills, mingling, rubbing shoulders, getting contacts.



I find 'socialite' functions really sad. Bother to look beneath the surface and you'll see that there's really no sincerity. Not that getting business contacts or having a wedding dinner full of powerful people is wrong, I just can't stand it when glitz, glamour and socialising becomes a front for schemeing, politics, and backstabbing.



My mom has a nice teowchew phrase for it: "Zho4 Nang1" - to put a show of being nice when you really don't wanna do so. She told me a story of how my dad got very angry at my cousin, cos when they paid them a surprise visit to see their new baby they just stayed in the room, and my dad's sister had to entertain them. I was so stunned... I mean, how can ANYONE get angry over that?

1) Suprise visit = no warning = they don't know = they're not prepared = for goodness sake's maybe it's a just a freakin' bad time
2) Think about it: if you had a new baby, wouldn't you be wanting to show her off to your relatives? Even if you were tired you'd try to zho4 nang1 and come out for at least a few minutes, right? They not coming shows that something serious is up, and they really really need to stay in the room with the kid.
3) And when they met my aunt even she avoided telling them why my cousins couldn't meet them - isn't this a really clear THIS IS A BAD TIME sign? Man... how could he accuse them of being rude? :(



Maybe that's why a lot of people who enjoy "zho4-ing nang1" and socialising events aren't very sensitive people*. They can't see, or choose not to see, the currents beneath surface actions. And when someone says, "no I can't do this for you", instead of having compassion at the trouble the person is facing, they see the only the surface, so they see it as a personal attack.



Long, long post :) wonder if any reader will actually read all the way to here haha... I once thought to myself - doesn't it seem like there are more talkers then listeners in the world? You know what? I'm glad it seems that way. Let the talkers talk and let the socialisers socialise; my inner world and the little bit of personal space around me is big enough for me. :)

*just my opinion from what I've observed, doesn't mean everyone's like that - if you enjoy socialising it's ok, God still loves you. HAHAHAHAHA ok just joking.

ok this kinda sucks, i hate the last 2 lines, but can't be bothered to sit here for another good part of the night thinking of how to improve it :)

I like to think that poems are more for the writer than the reader. Perhaps poets never write for others, but for themselves: to put in writing, for release, for vindication, perhaps to share something with those who are really listening (or bother to, or know how to). Perhaps having a poem achieve fame is just a minor blessing for a poet.

How often do you stop to think why a poet wrote what he did? :)

We were never meant to learn to walk on our own; we were meant to simply rest as things worked out for us.

rough day at work. for a few hours it had all the makings of a business drama: broken software, slamming of a phone, staring at plans in frustration... and at one point my PR skills were put to the test, and I promptly failed which made me feel pretty guilty.



isn't it awesome how God speaks so directly during sermons? so many times I've had a problem in the week and God deals with it directly through the preaching.

at bible study in the evening pastor talked about the balance between being a so-called "good Christian giver" and having Godly wisdom. the passage talking about turning the other cheek is there not to tell us to be nothing but meek and gentle, but it's telling us to overcome evil with good :) think about it: is it better to take up a challenge to a fight just because your pride is hurt, or to smile and do nothing, showing that you are above this because your pride is in Jesus, and it can never be hurt?

so the next time i'm faced with a PR problem, Lord help me to overcome unreasonable people by being "unreasonably good"! haha

had this image in my mind a few years ago. it eventually became a poem. maybe i'll share it one day; i'm one of those who know they write sucky poems but enjoy reading their own work haha

Somewhere in time there's a town in the middle of a sandy country. Imagine a quiet town, where the only movement you can imagine is the shafts of sunlight forcing perspiration out of your dry pores. Sure, occassionally, there's wind, but what wind you find blows sand into your tearless eyes.

Today the air is so still.

On either side of the semblance of a road you see old wooden buildings, stained by the sand and the sun, the kind of buildings you see only in westerns. In fact you can imagine a stately man with a statelier moustache, in denim jeans and riding a brown-white horse coming trot-a-trot up to the porch with the little wooden sign over it. You can imagine the sign shaking slightly as he slams the door shut behind him, leaving the road empty again.

And the flower is alone again.

Look closely and you may be able to see the dew on the blood-red petals, the almost pulsating veins in the leaves, the stem that shivers like a living thing. Look deeper and you may be able to see his heart, and the way his hand grasps the rose. You may be able to see the throbbing of his chest and the longing in his eyes. He's not moving, not at the moment at least.

So the scene is set, the canvas is stained, and the song is written.

But suddenly with a subtle shift in the harsh dyes the boy turns to look down the road. You look too and you see nothing wrong; just the same old sand. But as the boy you feel - you feel your muscles suddenly tense, you feel your breath being held, you your heartbeat pounding like something trapped. In the moment you glanced to the side you felt the anger, you felt the cutting, cutting heat of hate, and the thorn cut deep into your frightened palm.

I could feel it coming.

just had a thought... i think it's actually a good thing when you realise you're sad about something so sensitive you really can't share it with anyone, cos it forces you to do what you really should be doing all the time: giving up, and letting God handle it all :) anyway,

see the family resemblance through the 3 generations? :) this was at this cousin's baby's first month celebration... nice to see all the babies being born and watching them grow up. oh and i noticed that carrying babies properly is a skill. i vaguely remember picking him (or was it a her? lol) up and nearly dropping him haha... but was so cool to watch as my dad swept the kid off his little feet and held him with the seasoned grace of a father of 4 haha..

Was reminded stongly this morning that a blog is a public domain - I can't control who's reading it (for blogger at least), and I definitely can't control what people feel about my posts. This is expecially bad for people who like the wear their emotions on their skin - like me if you haven't noticed. Also I was a bit surprised to learn the reason why people substitute letter for numbers and stuff like that (I thought it was just cos it looked cute!).

I'd hate if my blog became another thing to worry or be burdened about - oh no what would so-and-so think about this post, should I change that word, etc - rather than a place to share how I feel with people.

so...

Let's just say I rather not have a blog than be worried about one.

Life is like a...

i actually had a lot of other stuff to write, but you know how sometimes you go hey! that's a beautiful thought! and you just have to write it down?

A friend told me something on MSN tonight: our lives are all like Korean dramas, we just don't get to see it from the audience' viewpoint. Isn't that a beautiful thought? I think it's quite true. We think our lives are so bland and boring, but take a step back into the audience, and stumble into the chair and remember...

Remember the time, with misted eyes, you silently cursed because your dear friend beside you was crying and you forgot to bring a packet of tissue.

Remember the time you looked down at an almost death-bed and realised with a heavy, heavy heart, that even this man's family members did not understand him, could not see what you see, and that his secrets were going to die with him.

Remember the time you wandered up to the rooftop just to be alone, away from the busyness, away from the crowd, away from the loud voices, and remember how you sat on the warm concrete, hugged your knees, and leaned your tired head on the comforting wall.

during bible study today pastor said that no one likes to be gloomy and sad. yup call me a weirdo but i actually disagree. of course, when we're sad we always try to get out of it - that's just natural. but i think i'd hate to be in a constant state of happiness...

it's in sadness and weakness that i truly introvert (verb!), like dive into my heart and think - think about what's making me sad, about how i feel - and as an introvert (noun!) i can tell you that living on the inside feels so much richer than on the outside :)

also gloom and sadness brings tears. tears are powerful, i tell you. i don't think anything wrenches my heart more than a tearing face. tears flowing freely are a release, an opening of the storeroom of burden, an acknowledgement that our hearts are just too small to hold so much pain. tears embody the process of giving up burdens.

and as the lamp takes an eternal moment to wink out i feel a sudden welling joy, a joy that speaks in a silent, deep baritone, alone again, dear heart, alone again. free from hiding in the inner darkness as i play the game of life, now once more surrounded by gloom i introvert. and slowly i meander the byways of my heart and search. and find. objects to mull upon, ideas that grow, hopes and fears that blossom in the twilight between waking and dream. and the stream of semiconsciousness simply flows. some of them are just too big, my friend. get a new wineskin, get a new wineskin. and overflows in pulsing crystal currents that shimmer in the glow of the darkness. i cry, but i cry dreams and visions, i cry memory and sorrow, i cry stories and hopes, i cry darkness and gloom. and slowly, slowly, the sun rises once more. the pillow is wet, dear heart, the pillow is wet.

The last time I was at a club I...

1. Got stopped at the door cos I didn't have a UV chop and didn't know where to get one.
2. Wanted to ask for a sprite, just a cup of happy bubbly non-alcoholic sprite, but didn't cos I was too paiseh.
3. Was resisting the urge to cover my ears.
4. Sat alone at a table thinking a million eyes were on this underdressed loser (cos the rest went to buy drinks).
5. Wanted the earth to swallow me up.
6. Wanted to hide in the toilet.
7. Wanted to leave.

Assets are of a debit nature

Think about that statement for a while... Isn't it sad?

Spent most of today learning accounting at Tecman. Was a big eye-opener: saw for the first time Tecman's actual income statements and balance sheets and what have you =)

And my dad gave me a very good overview of accountancy too. He mentioned an equation:

Net worth = Assets - Liabilities

Isn't it a sad way to find out the worth of a person? =)

It gave me a good idea of the kind of job I want. I think I'm definitely not the sit-in-the-office-the-whole-day sort.

I wanna wear jeans to work. I wanna run up and down joking and having fun with people and at the same time doing important theoretical work. I want a job that has a large scope and at the same time gives freedom for individual interaction with people. Hehe.

Actually felt a bit guilty for doing deskwork all day. One of the temp staff my mom hired spent the whole day displaying and arranging products at our new unit. Felt so sorry for her at the end of the day cos she looked like she needed to go home right NOW or she would just fall asleep standing there... And there I was sitting cheerfully in front of a computer screen the whole day =/

Lol... I think I'm a bit too compassionate to be Tecman's boss.

That said, should I run Tecman in the future? Should I carry on my Physics plan instead? I dunno, I'll just rest. A good friend used to love this phrase:

I have a dream!

Ok I can't say that I'm as passionate about changing Tecman as the speaker of said famous line was, but anyway, here's the dream =)

1. Tecman as a homely, yet professional Christian store.
2. A place where people love to work - where the boss motivation comes from a happy atmosphere and not a 'kan chiong' atmosphere.
3. A place that people will immediately think of when they want to buy something Christian!

I used to think that this change can be done easily if the people are willing, but after starting (hard) work at Tecman I'm reminded again of why there's so much inertia. The way my mom runs it leaves little room for change. Not that it's a bad thing - the management is very flat, my mom runs around a lot settling things, and it makes the atmosphere very homely and close. But it also means that she tends to get stressed out and too busy to try to modernize Tecman.

Consequently, Tecman looks its age... It looks like an old-fashioned store trying to be modern and failing at it, and not as a store that just got an order for 1 million communion cups. This makes it very hard to attract good and young employees, and the lack of good staff makes it hard to even tidy the place up. It's gonna take a dream to change Tecman =) A corporation's image is cultivated into being, and perhaps all it takes to start the cultivation is one person dreaming it, and slowly but surely spreading it.

you know what i see Tecman becoming?
I see our new store looking bright, happy and totally new.
I see people wandering into the shop just to check out what this happy-looking store is all about.
I see a crowd forming in the morning outside our doors before we open in the morning.
I see our staff busy from all the customers but having so much fun they can't wipe that smile off their faces.
I see a boss that's humble enough to help out on an individual basis, and yet wise enough to delegate work.
I see a cosy cafe forming just outside our store, complete with broadband internet access.
I see people using the cafe to browse stacks of books and to rest from a morning of shopping.
I see our good relations with suppliers continue, and I see deals cut so well that it just had to be God in the midst.
And I see Tecman being a major lighthouse of glorification to God, and a testament to what He can do when His people simply believe.

Despair, the Sister of Dream

just collecting some thoughts that have been popping up recently...

I told a good friend on MSN something almost profound today:

To know loss is to know love.

Not sure if I got that line from somewhere or made it up, but I wrote it down as the very first line of a long and sad piece of writing while asking the question:
Would you rather have known a deep love and then felt a deep hurt from losing that love, or not have loved at all?

Which will you choose? To plunge and risk or to run from the cliff and never know what it feels like to fly?

Reminds me of a line from a song that played on another dear friend's blog some time back:

I know I love you because I miss you.

(Heartaches, pains, sadness. Just had a thought - some Christians have a millitant stance against pain. At the slightest hint of 'feeling emotional' or 'feeling down' they reject the feeling and speak against it and what not. Then why did Paul say that he delights in weaknesses? Maybe it's just me, but in a way I find it nice to feel emotional and even sad, because doing so just shows how weak I am, and how reliant I am on God - relying on His perfect strength because we're nothing on our own. wow, sidetracked, back to the topic)

My mom has a saying - 'If you don't eat this food, you won't know how to regret ar!" Not even knowing how to regret... I've sometimes told myself it must be sad for a couple to break up, cos of all the wasted years they could have spent with the next bf/gf/spouse. But I realise that's so stupid, because to God there's no such thing as waste. People say the army is a 2.5-year waste of time, I say God taught me the power of rest in that time. People say gamers are wasting their time playing 10 hrs a day, maybe God's using them to form Christian communities online. God wastes nothing, we're His hands, and that's what's special about Christianity: we're called to simply rest.

Simply resting. There's just so much power in trust.

gosh that was a pretty stream of consciousness post... I better post pictures next or you guys will stop reading my blog out of boredom lol. And no, this *emo* post is not meant to cryptically hint at any problem in my life =P

4 Things/People that/who make me smile:

1. Sitting on a hilltop in the middle of a huge forest watching clouds cast huge shadows over the plains as the sky turns from blue to pink to red, letting the night stars slowly wink into existence, while having a nice conversation with God. (I'll post pictures some time =))

2. 4 letters: d, e, l and a. need i say more? :D

3. Watching Zing constantly getting sidetracked by stuff to buy for herself when she's really trying to buy clothing for her sis hahahah

4. Fat guinea pigs that sit in a little nest of sawdust in a corner of the cage of a pet shop just staring contentedly into space with this huh? expression :D

4 ways to win my heart:

1. Sincerity - It's quite obvious to me when people are putting up an act. Looking back, it seems the best friendships I've had were with people who didn't try to hide their feelings or present a facade.

2. Be courageous enough to know that hurts are often healed by talking, even crying them out.

3. Knowing that friendhips and relationships are all about God, cos He is love. There's something very deep and very true about this - God is love. He's not just in love with us, neither is He merely there when people love. He is love! To agape someone is to let someone touch God =) All this talk about 'true love' is pointless to us believers, cos seeing what Jesus did for us is enough to know what love is really like.

4. If I choose to donate my organs to science, you might actually be able to win my heart in a bid or something if you're in a research facility that needs hearts to study =P

4 things i believe in:

1. Flowers!! (first line of the first page of the adhoc book haha)

2. that God will make everything work out for my good :) I went through a whole year of huge problems in the army, and each time I thought there was no way it could be solved; but each time God proved my worrying pointless and made it all work out wonderfully.

3. The power of simply listening =)

4. That you need to get your hamster used to human stroking and touching from young or it'll grow up really scared of touch. I had this hamster that would SQUEAK and do a backflip everytime i tried to stroke it haha

4 things i'm afraid of:

1. Losing memories... I'm a forgetful person, and I've had so many wonderful memories that faded away. Makes me very scared of losing memories so I try to store up stuff or write things down. Zing once asked me why I didn't ask God for a better memory; It's painful sometimes, but I guess I'm content like this. I wouldn't treasure each passing moment so much if not for my forgetfulness. And being quite an emotional person (yea yea, SNAG, whatever :P) I don't think I'll be able to handle it if I could remember every single wonderful moment.

2. Orchard Road - firstly it's so so crowded, secondly when I walk down the road I see how badly dressed I am compared to all these 'cool' people, thirdly it's just so so crowded. =)

3. New experiences... I don't like uncertainties =/ If I had a choice I'd probably just continue my life as it is now without changing it, spend time with the same dear friends, hang out at the same places, do the same things... It's the same with meeting new people (more so in a formal setting) cos I stutter when I'm afraid of what someone thinks.

4. Parties where I don't know everyone that well. I'm not the sort that knows how to casually slip into a circle of people talking and just join them and get click with them immediately. If you ever lose me in a party, come find me in the toilet - chances are I'm hiding there to get away from the fear that people are laughing at how unsociable I am lol.

4 things i do everyday:

1. Try to pack up my room =P

2. Wake up whatever time I want to!! (mmmm glorious freedom from NS life)

3. Look at the stains on my brushing-teeth cup and tell myself I really should get a new one.

4. Open my curtains and smile at how glorious a room can feel with sunlight pouring in.

4 things/ people i want to see NOW:

1. People bidding for my Yahoo! Auctions lol

2. Me actually getting down to revising stuff for uni - gotta recap JC stuff for placement tests so I can get into better courses, or even get credit for courses in UChig.

3. Tecman - revamped, looking spanking new, everything professionally done =) For those who don't know, (shameless advert) my mom runs Tecman, the largest Christian store in one place in Singapore, it's at Bras Basah #04-47, #03-38 and #01-xx! We're in the process of shifting to a bigger place within Bras Basah. It's been one of my dreams to help revamp Tecman, cos the image many people have of it is of a second-class bookstore. We have a very very loyal customer base, people who have been shopping with us for decades, but I feel we need the younger generation to be interested in us, which will take some effort because it takes a different sort of philosophy, different sort of store decor, different image, to attract buyers from our generation. Something I really want to help Tecman do.

4. Me driving confidently throughout Singapore hehe... I only passed my driving test 2 or 3 weeks ago and I really haven't tried expressways and what not. Well my mom's bringing me out to drive her car now right now lol

I realised something... My family has so many chiobu's dunno why the girls turn out so chio but we guys all... well... nevermind.

My eldest sister got married in New York last year. Quite cool how my siblings are all over the globe. One lives in USA, another in UK, another studying in the US... only me left near the equator O.o



Eunice, Mary, and Eunice's husband - Esther got all the siblings and their respective spouses and girlfriend :) to be the bridesmaids and groomsmen

Mary and our cousin's little kid - he was the scariest baby we've ever seen cos he was so smart... we could see him silently observing things around him. scary. :D

My dear cousins! I have so many cousins I sometimes can't keep track of who is which uncle's child haha

My granddad passed away last year. He was a wonderful person. The only one in the family who simply did not get involved in any family squabbles - he always seemed happy and at rest inside. Great person =)

Heh I never thought I'd actually start a blog! Have been really fond of good 'ol pencil and paper journals - I've got something like 11 years of fond memories stored in 13 journals - but I thought I'd be good to start one so you lovely people can know what's going on in my not-so-adventurous life when I fly off to the States. Anyway change can be a good thing...


hahaha pink the colour of freedom

Talking about change, ORD Loh! One huge, long chapter of my life was closed and sealed when they returned me my pink IC today. Army life has been painful, of course, but one thing God really taught me was that everything turns out fine in the end. So many times I've thought that this problem would be impossible to solve, even too big for God to solve, and I worry, worry and worry... But in the end, somehow things would just fall into place - God would make the right things happen, make the right people cross my way, and it would all turn out fine in the end. It got to a point where I no longer cared when a problem came by, 'cos I knew it would turn out for my good. And I figure that if problems in the army don't bother me anymore, nothing much will haha...

All in all I'd say I've had a great time in army. Worked hard, contributed much, learned a lot (as opposed to those guys who just laze the whole day), and had lots of fun of course... I'll really treasure the memories. I'm sad that those memories now have to be boxed away and sealed and stamped PAST, but I guess there's always a time to move on.

Anyway, yeah this blog is seriously empty and bleak now =P but I'll be improving it as I get the hang of the code. Till the next time I update, *wave*
